Warming Spices for Postpartum Nourishment

When supporting postpartum, we try to use as many warming spices in our ingredients as possible. Warming spices have the impressive ability to support and nourish the body in the postpartum period making them highly beneficial ingredients to incorporate. ⁠

Some of our favourites to use are:

Turmeric is incredibly supportive for the early postpartum period. This herb is known as a uterotonic, which gently stimulates the uterus and helps it return to its pre-pregnancy size. The active compound in turmeric, curcumin, gives the root its rich golden color also has powerful anti-inflammatory properties that support recovery after birth.

Ginger is well known for improving and supporting digestion. The shifting of organs during pregnancy to make room for baby can lead to digestive complications after birth as the body adjusts back. Ginger is also an effective lactogenic herb that supports milk supply for breastfeeding mamas.

Cinnamon & cardamom help warm the body. The wisdom of ancient Eastern and Ayurvedic traditions encourages warming foods spices in the postpartum period to increase circulation, improve digestion and restore energy.

Chinese Five Spice named due to its representation of the five elements (earth, air, water, fire and ether) contains cinnamon, clove, star anise, fennel and sichuan peppercorn. The combination of these five spices make it a powerhouse addition to the postpartum pantry due to its nutritional benefits, increasing circulation, improving digestion as well as stabilizing blood sugar.
