Recipe: Savoury Granola Bars

Easy Family Meal Ideas

We’re all about the snacks at my house. My kids might actually be fuelled by snacks because the snacking never seems to stop (haha). Oftentimes, when people think about snacks, they think of a granola bar or a loaf or muffin. And these are wonderful and can be made healthfully, but sometimes it’s just nice to have something savoury. Enter: Savoury Granola Bars. They’re the perfect balance between sweet and savoury. Chock full of nutrients like magnesium from sprouted oats and seeds, omega 3’s and plant protein from hemp hearts, and calcium from un-hulled sesame seeds. These are the perfect 3pm pick-me up or lunchbox snack since they’re nut free—and they are ridiculously easy to make. The recipe is also very forgiving so if you don’t have the exact ingredients on hand, feel free to make substitute with something similar!

Savoury Granola Bars

PREP TIME: 10 minutes | COOK TIME: 2-ish hours | SERVINGS: 20 bars

Ingredients

  • 2 cups one degree organic sprouted rolled oats

  • 1 cup raw sunflower seeds

  • ½ cup flaxseeds

  • ½ cup dehydrated pomegranate seeds

  • ¼ cup pumpkin seeds

  • ¼ cup unhulled sesame seeds (we like these)

  • ¼ cup chia seeds

  • ¼ cup hemp hearts

  • 3 tablespoons extra virgin coconut oil

  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup

  • 1 teaspoon dried rosemary

  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt

  • ½ teaspoon dried oregano

  • ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

  • 2 cups warm water

  • Maldon salt, for garnish

Method

  1. In a large bowl, combine all of the ingredients in order. Once fully incorporated, add a pinch of Maldon salt. Cover bowl and let rest for 30 minutes.

  2. Preheat the oven to 275°F. Spread the mixture evenly onto a parchment-lined sheet pan. Sprinkle the top lightly with more Maldon salt and bake until the granola bars have completely hardened, around 1 hour and 45 minutes to 2 hours.

  3. Transfer the sheet to a cutting board and remove the parchment paper. Cut the granola bars into rectangles 4 inches in length and 1½ inches in width. Allow the bars to completely cool before serving. Store in an airtight sealed container for up to 1 week.
